The Monroe Police Department offers a $10,000 signing bonus to new hires who are post-certified with at least one year of patrol experience!

MPD Officers are eligible to receive an additional check each year, which is based on sales tax revenue.

Employment Benefits

Vacation is earned at the following rate:

  • 1-4 Years of Service = 150 Hours Yearly
  • 5-9 Years of Service = 190 Hours yearly
  • 10-14 Years of Service = 230 Hours Yearly
  • 15+ Years of Service = 270 Hours Yearly

Total Hours Accrued = 960

MPD Officers will receive an additional day of vacation each quarter for not calling in sick.

Designated Holiday: MPD Officers are compensated for working holidays.

The following are recognized as designated holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Day
  • Easter
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
  • Employee’s Birthday
    • If an employee’s birthday falls on a holiday, the employee will be compensated for both.

Any new holidays proclaimed by City Council.

Police Officers with the Monroe Police Department belong to the Municipal Police Employees Retirement System (MPERS). The current retirement plan is:  

  • 3% accrual rate
  • 5 year or 60 month average final compensation
  • 25 years of service at any age – Regular Retirement
  • 12 years of service at age 55 – Regular Retirement
  • 20 years of service at any age reduced from 55 – Early Retirement
  • 30 years of service shall equal 3 1/3% of average final compensation

DROP/IBO must be eligible for regular retirement only to participate

Each employee is entitled to sick leave with full pay for any illness or injury, not brought about by his own negligence or culpable indiscretion, which prevents his attendance at duty for a period of 52 weeks.

Police Officer Application Process

Take and successfully pass the Louisiana Civil Service Exam. Civil Service test scores are valid for 18 months post-test and must be valid on the day of hire.

Email your test results to maynor.gray@ci.monroe.la.us to receive your Monroe Police Department Application.

Once you have completed the application in its entirety, you must bring your completed application and the necessary documentation to the MPD Recruiter at the Monroe Public Safety Center, 1810 B Martin Luther King Junior Drive, Monroe 71202.

Successfully complete the Physical Requirement Test which includes 1.5 mile run, 300 meter run, push-ups, and sit ups. Candidates may attend scheduled PRT dates or individual appointments can be made.

Date and Time of your DVSA exam to be scheduled with the MPD Recruiter.

Candidate interviews with a selected panel of officers and if the peer interview is successfully completed is scheduled for an interview with the Chief of Police.

Congratulations! Once you’ve successfully completed the previous steps and your Academy start date is scheduled, you will attend and prepare to protect and serve throughout your career as a member of the MPD.

*Notice to Military services members and college students: Because the process of becoming a Police Officer is time-consuming, we recommend that you should begin the application and testing phase two (2) months prior to your departure from military service or college.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. At least 21 years old to apply for Police Officer (or 21 years of age by first day of Academy)
  2. At least 18 years old to apply for Communications Officer
  3. At least 18 years old to apply for Police Records Clerk
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen
  5. Must be able to read, write, and speak English
  6. Must be registered with the Selective Service (males only}
  7. Must possess one of the following: high school diploma, high school equivalency certificate, high school transcript, affidavit from the issuing high school, associate’s or bachelor’s degree, or college transcript, any of which must indicate graduation has occurred or a degree was awarded. A certificate of completion shall not be sufficient to substitute for a diploma or equivalency certificate.

Basic Requirements

  1. 18 years old or over
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen
  3. Must possess one of the following: high school diploma, high school equivalency certificate, high school transcript, affidavit from the issuing high school, associate’s or bachelor’s degree, or college transcript, any one of which must indicate that graduation has occurred or a degree awarded. A certification of completion shall not be sufficient to substitute for a diploma or equivalency certificate.
  4. Must possess a valid Driver’s License
  5. Score 75% or higher on the Civil Service Exam
  6. No significant criminal history

Master Disqualifications

  1. Have been convicted of, plead guilty to, or nolo contendre to any felony
  2. Have been convicted of, plead guilty to, or nolo contendre to a misdemeanor resulting from a felony case
  3. Have been convicted of, plead guilty to, or nolo contendre to and/or show a history of domestic violence. This includes a conviction of a lesser charge, which at the time of occurrence was a domestic violence crime.
  4. Used marijuana within the past two years
  5. Sold, cultivated, or produced marijuana within the past five years
  6. Sold, cultivated, produced, used, or transported any other illegal narcotic to include the transportation of marijuana, within the past 5 years
  7. Have been dishonorably discharged from any military branch
  8. Have been convicted of any civil rights violations
  9. Have been terminated or resigned from any law enforcement agency for any criminal conduct unless the charges or allegations were exonerated or cleared
  10. If you have been arrested for a felony, have not had your felony arrest expunged, unless expungements are not allowed by the state. The APO will review all misdemeanor and felony arrests
  11. Have been convicted, plead guilty to, or nolo contendre to a DWI or related charges in the last two years. A diversion or similar action is the same as a guilty plea
  12. Have been involved in more than four at-fault crashes within a two-year period
  13. If you have been found to have lied during any part of the hiring process, you will be disqualified.
